Depression in Dementia

Abstract
Dementias, notably the dementia in Alzheimer¢¥s disease, commonly display variety of behavioral and emotional symptoms such as depression, anxiety agitation and even psychosis during the course of the illnesses. Depressived symptoms in dementia patients frequently raise several issues concerning the diagnostic validity, etiology, clinical manifestation, prognosis, treatment and the pathophysiological relationship of depression with the dementia. Although the depressive symptoms in dementia have lots in common with the so-called functional depressive disorder, some unique characteristics may deserve to be noted. First, depressions in dementia patients are very common and plays negative role in the prognosis and well being of the patient and caregivers. Second, there is no unanimous explaination for the development of depression in dementia patients, but the role of vascular depression and neurodegenerative process in certain neurotransmitter system are being explored. Third, the diagnosic criteria for the depression in dementia should be developed and validated to activate research for the depression in dementia. Some basics in the treatment of depression in dementia are also discussed.
